Where are the kidneys located in the human body?

The kidneys are positioned in the back of the body, specifically in the retroperitoneal space above the waist. This anatomical location allows the kidneys to be protected by the rib cage while also being accessible for their vital functions, such as filtration of blood and regulation of electrolyte balance. The location of the kidneys, towards the posterior side of the abdomen and just above the waistline, is critical for their role in maintaining homeostasis in the body. Being situated in this area helps facilitate their interactions with other structures, such as the ureters, which transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder, and the aorta and inferior vena cava, which supply blood to and drain blood from the kidneys.
